The Power of HIIT

Metabolic exercises are a busy mom's best friend.  With so many responsibilities and things to get done throughout the day, fitting in time to be active and taking care of yourself shouldn't be an added stress.

Metabolic exercises such as High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT, allow you to get in a great workout in less the time. As a busy entrepreneur and mom of three kids, these are the types of workouts I have been turning to lately when I can't get my run in.

Take a look around YouTube and you will find some many of these videos and channels to subscribe to. This type of conditioning movements utilize your own body weight, and are exercises you can do anywhere, but most importantly in the comfort of your own home. If the kids call you while you are in the middle of the workout (which they usually do...) you can easily resume when your done helping them. Better yet, rounds can be broken up throughout the day, to be done while dinner cooks, or when the kids are watching their favorite show (don't judge, a mom has to do what a mom has to do).

HIIT consists of alternating short durations of anaerobic exercise typically lasting between 15 and 20 minutes that often alternates between 30 seconds of high intensity. These quick and powerful intervals are beneficial in many ways.

1. You can get in a great workout in less time.

2. They require no equipment.

3. You can do them just about anywhere.

4. You can change up your routine to avoid boredom.

5.They burn more calories than longer durations of moderate cardio.

6. HIIT improves your aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

7. These exercises target belly fat by improving insulin sensitivity. Your body will more readily use glucose for fuel rather than storing it a fat around your middle.

8. You use your body weight to build muscle and tone.

9. Workouts can be modified for people on all fitness levels and with special health conditions.

10.Interval training increase calorie burn long after the workout is done. The American College of Sports and Medicine states that High Intensity Interval Training helps you take in more oxygen than a non-interval workout routine. The extra oxygen consumed helps increase your rate of metabolism from about 90 minutes to 144 minutes after a session of interval training. This causes the increased metabolism to burn more calories at a faster rate.

Interval training has become my best friend lately. It saves me time, allows me to get my workout in, and do more throughout the day. Have you tried HIIT lately? What are some time saving ways that you fit in fitness?
