7 Tricks To Help With Motivation

You may have decided that this year is going to be the year for a healthier you. It is easy to hit road bumps and come across obstacles in your health and fitness journey, but sometimes, the struggle is just finding the motivation to keep at it. Here are some tips that will help you find motivation to continue your mission of health and wellness in 2016. You can also check out my other blog post Steps to Starting and Maintaining Your Fitness Lifestyle for more help.

1.  Take each day at a time: Focus on today and not tomorrow or the next day. Go for a walk/run, hit the weights, or do an exercise video. Get your sweat and endorphins on.

2. Remember your why: A healthy lifestyle is a journey. When the going gets tough, remember why you started, and why you keep going. What is your inner most reason why? Reflect on that, write it down on a 3x5 card, and keep it in a place where you can easily find it, or put it on your bathroom mirror or refrigerator for a daily reminder. Call upon his help and dig deep to your soul. Have courage. Where we are weak, he is strong! Phil 4:13

3. Find your motivation daily: Will power is only temporary. Sometimes all we need is to read or listen to a motivational video to get us inspired to exercise. Find what motivates you such as:
a.   Journaling: Set aside a notebook or cheap journal to write down your favorite quotes or Bible verses. Write down how you feel after a workout and keep track of all victories, no matter how small. Don't forget any non-scale victories. When you get discouraged, you can go back and look at how working out helped you feel better, cope with stress, or made you feel good/strong. Recording all victories show you that set backs do not define you, and because you have done it once you can do it again.

 b.   Motivational videos or TED talks
c.    Fitness jewelry: look down at your wrist, neck, or shoe at fitness jewelry that contain affirmations/sayings when you feel like giving up, and repeat the saying(s) in your head. Keep repeating it until you believe it. Some days we need a little extra boost or encouragement to keep us going. Some great companies that sell fitness inspired jewelry are Momentum and Endorphin Warrior.

d.    Support/accountability: Having a workout out partner or working out with a group not only helps the time pass quicker but you look forward to working out. Plus, having someone meet you or a designated time increases your chances that you will exercise.
4. Sticky notes: Place sticky notes with affirmations and inspirational sayings on your bulletin board, bathroom mirror, refrigerator, or other areas where you can see them through out the day. Sticky notes placed on your bathroom mirror is a good way to start the day out with positivity.
5. Music: Listen to your favorite upbeat music as you get dressed to get you pumped up and ready to go. Create a special play list on your phone, MP3 player or IPod that you can listen to while working out for an added boost.
6. Wear bright and cheerful clothes: Bright colors have a cheerful effect on your mood and can help you push even harder.

7. Changing your perspective: Whether it is starting a new exercise program, a healthy lifestyle, or completing another goal in life; the first step is to change your mental habits. We are our own worst enemy. Discouraged that something is harder than you thought, that you will never accomplish what you think you want to do or should? Do you think that you could never be healthy, run a 5k, keep up in a cycling class at the gym, walk the loop in your neighborhood, that you will never lose the weight, or complete that life goal? Change the way you think by identifying the things you can do right now.  Focus on fun activities that you can do with friends and family. Celebrate what you can do today and know that every improvement is a step in the right direction.
